HI Andrew. I found your page online and am thrilled to be able to use it - thanks for sharing. However, when I am testing thefinished site in explorer (of course) the background of the page being called shows white when I specify no background color at all. (The displaying page text is on top of a static image in the final rendering, so I don't want to cover it up with a background color...) it looks good in every other browser i test, pc and mac, but how to work around this in ie - where should I look? I am unsure of how to address and fix this issue. And ideas or suggestions you may have would be greatly, greatly, greatly appreciated!
Thanks for your time,
Danielle

Sure thing, here you go:

I run the site "Hiking New England (.com)", on which I integrated an Amazon Astore (affiliate program). The issue I had was that Astores can only be linked-to, or added as an Iframe. Linked-to is fine, but I wanted the shop integrated seamlessly into my design. Thus, I was forced into using the iFrame.

http://www.hikingnewengland.com/outdoor-gear/

I implemented the solution above. With JavaScript enabled, the user is presented with the full Astore catalog. With JavaScript disabled (like most bots), the user is presented with a link to the Astore using search-friendly terms.

Let me know if this is what you were looking for.

Cheers!

Hi Andrew,
Great post! I'd like to see this on a site to analyze its usefulness for SEO. Do you have any site examples where step two is implemented?

Thanks!

Thinking about Ryan comment, I've found another way to set the iframe's width and height. You can define a different class for each iframe in the page, when you have more than one, and specify (using CSS) the dimensions that you want.

The script might be something like this:

$('a.iframe').each(
  function (i) {
    $(this).replaceWith('');
  }
);

Hi Andrew!

I just came across this site from a google search on iframes and I have a question regarding this technique (which I totally love and am going to start implementing!

Everywhere I read SEO's talk about how iframes are bad for seo. I almost have to absolutely use an iframe and cant avoid it. So I was wondering does this technique make it seo friendly? or not as bad for my websites seo efforts when implemented?

Thanks for the awesome post.

Aha, I didn't think of using a class in the generated iframe and targeting it. Thanks! :)

A way to pass those can certainly be added to the script, but I was using CSS to handle the iFrame dimensions by adding this to my stylesheet: iframe { height: 500px; width: 500px; }

Does that help, or would you like to see an updated script?

Cheers,
